How do Selma High students approach fashion in the wintertime?
Sophomore Junior Perez likes to layer his clothing to protect himself from the cold air, which also elevates his outfits. He prefers to wear vests in cooler weather and has multiple in his collection.
Junior prefers to buy clothes from secondhand shops. He believes that buying secondhand enhances the piece of clothing, gives it more character, and a sort of mysterious vibe.
Junior likes to wear a mix of soft colors that are not all over the place and provide a clean look.
“Ties are my go-to, amplifying my outfit,” says Junior when explaining how he accessorizes his fits.
For footwear, he likes to wear dress shoes.
“They provide an excellent chef’s kiss to outfits,” mentions Junior.
When asked where he gets his inspiration for fashion, Junior says that he gets it from his best friend, Mason Martinez.
“His ability to express himself freely inspired me to do the same,” states Junior.
Being able to self-express through fashion is something really important to Junior as he believes that everyone should freely express themselves no matter the social norms. When it comes to clothes, he believes that everything has turned minimalistic, which is why he likes to create his own style. It creates distinction, and contributes to making his fits unique and original.
On the other hand, for junior Sophia Montejano, she enjoys following trends when it comes down to fashion. If it’s comfort over style, Sophia always aims for style. She explains her inspiration typically stems from fashion influencers on social media. Sophia loves to shop for clothing at Windsor, Shein, Modern by MB, Q, and Q Luv.
“My biggest issue when it comes to clothing is dress shopping. Some dresses are too long and I’ll step on it when I walk, or they’ll look weird on my body but looks good on the mannequin, the dress color not going with my skin tone, and dresses not enhancing my figure without showing much nor the dress being too tight,” explains Sophia.
When it comes to putting a label on things, Sophia doesn’t have a specific aesthetic. She explains, there are just countless beautiful pieces of clothing to be stuck on one. Despite facing wardrobe obstacles, Sophia always finds a way to shine bright.
“I accessorize my outfit based on what I am wearing. For example, if I am wearing something summery, I will wear gold jewelry that has some colors to it and have flowers or even butterflies. From there then I decide what type of summer bag will go with my outfit going based off of if the bag has any of the following: shells, pearls, flowers, or a straw bag,” adds Sophia.
In the fashion world Sophia’s “YES” takes on bottoms are skirts, flare jeans, and skinny jeans. Sophia’s go-to items for footwear would consist of sandals for summer and boots for winter. Sophia’s boots for the winter really emphasize her mood for the weather change. While they keep her warm, they also set a stylish image.
“As winter approaches I like to dress in boots, coats, jackets, skirts with sheer leggings, and skirts in colors like blue, beige, white, black, brown, burgundy, and army green,” states Sophia.
Sophia makes a great example of embracing the chilly weather paired with her unique style.
