The Selma High boys volleyball team has begun its season competing in both league matches and tournament play, including the Kings River Invitational on March the 28th.
Selma opened their league games on March 24th against Washington Union and is scheduled to face teams such as Reedley, Immanuel, Fowler, and Kerman throughout April as the season continues.
In addition to league, Selma competed in the Kings River Invitational, a two day tournament with several matches. The Bears had a slower start but stayed competitive, even against higher level teams.
“We were keeping up with D1 and D2 schools,” senior Abdulwahed Almuradi said.
The team carried that mentality into the second day, where they found their rhythm. Selma won three straight matches in bracket play to finish first in the bronze bracket.
“We were able to bring the momentum the next day,” Abdul said. “As a team right now we are much more consistent, and making fewer mistakes than we made in the past.”
That improvement was evident as the tournament went on, especially in closer matches where Selma was able to stay composed and finish sets.
“Even though there was a rough start, the tournament was really fun and we competed well against some tough teams,” senior Benjamin Menchaca said.
While winning the bronze bracket allowed Selma to finish on a high note, the real takeaway was the foundation they established as they continue to build for the season ahead.
“The season has been going very well so far,” Menchaca said. “We have improved a lot in our teamwork, but we could still work on bringing more energy and playing at our full potential each set.”
With tournaments now behind them and league matches continuing, Selma is focused on adjusting and improving as they spike forward into the schedule.
