The Selma High boys volleyball team closed out its season with a momentous achievement after qualifying for playoffs for the first time in the team’s history.
Throughout April, the group picked up important league wins against different teams including Fowler, Washington Union, and Kerman. As the season went on, Selma continued finding its stride through improved teamwork and consistency on the court.
Selma’s final league match of the season came during senior night against Immanuel on April 30, 2026. With a packed crowd, Selma battled through a hard-fought five set match before narrowly falling short with a score of 3-2.
Despite the loss, the support and energy surrounding the team showed how much the program had grown throughout the season.
Freshman Isaiah Anes said making playoffs showed how much he and the team had grown over the past three years, both individually and as a team.
“As a team I feel as though that we improved on communication, not only on court but off the court too,” Anes said. “The bench no matter what was loud which then helped the team on court.”
The Bears later traveled to Roosevelt High School for the first round of playoffs. Although Selma did not advance past the opening round, the playoff appearance remained a major accomplishment for the team.
Senior Izaiah Gonzalez-Barrita reflected on what making playoffs meant to the team after previous seasons ended short of postseason play.
“To be a part of history is a very special feeling that the team will always remember,” Gonzalez-Barrita said.
Izaiah also commented on the team’s chemistry and how the group developed throughout the season.
“In the last two years we’ve only had good players, however this year was different because we had a team that was able to work off of each other and support each other,” he said.
As the season came to a close, the teams playoff appearance and fight throughout league play highlighted the growth Selma boys volleyball showed throughout the season.
