Senior Irving Vejar-Sosa and his classmates won second place in the construction category at Tiger Romp that took place at Reedley College on Thursday March, 26th. Tiger Romp is a competition where students come together from various pathways to showcase the skills they’ve learned throughout the school year.
“I received welding gloves, a $25 Visa gift card, and a haircut voucher,” shares Irving.
Receiving the awards was Irving’s most memorable part at the competition, as it made him feel proud that his and his classmates’ hard work paid off.
Irving wants to pursue a construction pathway in the future. He thought that this competition was a great way to display all of the skills that he had gained this year. The skill that Irving and his classmates showcased was teamwork when framing a wall for the competition.
“I was most proud of showcasing this skill because it showed that my classmates and I could work well together under pressure,” Irving expressed.
The biggest thing that Irving learned from his experience at Tiger Romp is the importance of staying focused on the objective to get it done. Although he and his classmates were in a time crunch, staying focused allowed them to frame the wall and eventually get rewarded in the end.
Andrea Rivera, a senior, attended Tiger Romp representing sports medicine. This is not Andrea’s first option in the medical field exactly, though is not an option she would completely disregard. Andrea explains she was super nervous since it was her first time competing at a Tiger Romp event. Once she was done she realized how much fun it was to be around friends, support each other, and see other competitions. The skill Andrea demonstrated was taping.
“The skill I showcased that I’m most proud of is my taping. I was instructed to do a turf toe tape which was an easy tape job and it was quick,” states Andrea.
Andrea didn’t win anything herself, though the experience satisfied her as it was a memorable time. She recalls talking with her peers about how they did and just bonding with each other.
Andrea adds, “I learned that it’s okay to not know something and to just be confident with your actions.”
Senior Vanessa Rangel attended Tiger Romp with the CNA program. Vanessa holds interest in pursuing this pathway in her future. She explains how she is amazed by the variety of careers in the medical field that you can choose from. At the event, Vanessa was able to learn and see career technical education in action. She got a better look into the Reedley College campus environment while at Tiger Romp.
“The skill I was most proud of was the urinary output,” Vanessa shared. “Basically, in this skill, we had to measure the urine in a graduate while maintaining infection control. The nurses who tested me told me it was like I was reading it right off the paper which made me feel really confident.”
Vanessa thought the coolest thing she got to see at the competition was the different programs that Valley ROP has to offer.
“If you have the chance to attend Tiger Romp I would definitely encourage you to take it!” Vanessa expressed. “The campus is very nice, there’s vendors, and don’t let fear stop you from getting out there! It’s fine if you don’t necessarily win anything; it’s a great experience where all schools get together.”
