Selma High’s Junior Class of 2027 hosted our most recent prom, deciding on the theme “A Night in Rio.” The event was located at The Grand 1401 in downtown Fresno, the same place it’s been hosted at for the past few years, and occurred on March 21st, 2026. Due to the rainforest theme, the decor in the ballroom ranged from plastic flamingos to fake palm leaves plastered around the walls and tables, with a large metal palm tree placed behind the DJ table.
Underneath the balcony area on the bottom floor, there was a dessert and appetizers table with finger-food trays from Selma’s local restaurant, Sal’s, and mini charcuterie boards. The junior class also managed to bring in an Aguas Frescas and churros table where students could purchase additional food.
On the top floor and balcony of the venue, a professional photographer was placed towards the back where students could take professional photos with friends, their dates, or even by themselves. There were also tables where students could play board games or simply relax. The balcony allowed people on the top floor to see others dancing on the bottom floor.
Junior Savannah Lugo shared her opinions on the dance as an attendee.
“I felt prom was really nice and it felt nice to get out the house and dress up. The decorations were very pretty and on point with the theme,” Lugo explained. “I had an amazing time with my friends, creating memories and enjoying the moment.”
As for leadership student Addyson Fernandez, she described the process and the outcome of planning this event.
“It was fun getting to work with everyone and come up with a theme like Rio. It was also rewarding to see how all of our ideas came together in the end,” Fernandez said. “I really loved how prom turned out.”
Although many people went to the prom for the opportunity to show off their flashy dresses and suits, the true main event of the dance came towards the middle of the evening: the royalty winners. This year, candidates’ names were placed onto a Google Form, which students were able to access from a QR code on their tables.
This time, Selma High’s Prom King and Queen were seniors Christian Cervantes and Lexi Aguilera. Despite there not being a King and Queen dance, the two snapped a quick photo together with large smiles, showing their gratitude for the win.
As for junior Prince and Princess candidates, the lucky two chosen were Noah Torres and Isabella Sanchez, with Noah sharing a few words about his experience.
“It felt really good winning prince and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me and Isabella,” Torres quickly shared.
Overall, this year’s prom was an exciting memory that was shared amongst all that attended, being seen as another successful event hosted by Selma High.
