Selma High School’s winter arts programs concluded its season with an impressive showing at the South Valley Winter Arts Association (SVWAA) Championships competition, which was held on March 28th and 29th. The groups both earned fifth place in their respective divisions, with winter percussion achieving their highest score of the season.
The result was a meaningful milestone for both Winter Guard and Winter Percussion, especially after a season marked by personal challenges and growth demonstrative of the students commitment.
For senior Viktorya Chavez Diaz, returning to Winter Guard after a medical break, the performance was especially meaningful.
“I was proud and happy that I was almost able to get back into it like no time had passed,” she said.
Senior Brianna Condit shared a similar sense of accomplishment as the season came to an end.
“My performance at Champs was the cherry on top of the cake of the whole season,” Condit said. “I’m mainly proud of how much we’ve grown as a group in so little time, especially with the underclassmen,” added Condit.
Both groups described the season as one filled with growth, and improvement within so little time. A time marked with countless connections built throughout the season.
One of Viktorya’s favorite memories came during their rehearsal prior to champs, when the winter guard came together and brought clothes to partake in their thrift tradition.
“It’s one of the many countless memories made in rehearsal,” shared Diaz.
Freshman Ivan Barranco Santiago reflected on how the season shaped him personally, especially nearing the end of the season.
“It teaches you to pull your own weight because if you don’t, you don’t, [and] you’ll bring down everyone with you,” Santiago said.
Brianna also shared one of her most memorable moments during their first full run of the show.
“When we did our first full run of the show, everyone was tired but we pushed through together,” she said.
By bringing together outstanding performances and the support of their teammates, Selma’s winter arts programs displayed dedication, growth, and spirit that defined their season.
