As we progress into the spring season, SHS boys’ volleyball has officially started up for the 2026 season. Guiding this season is Coach Ly, who has been coaching for two years, now officially starting his third. Coach Ly and the players have various goals for this season, as well as many things to look forward to.
Coach Ly’s goal for this season is to have a winning record and potentially make a playoff run. More importantly, he wants this season to end on a high note as they have 12 seniors on the team.
Before the season started, Coach Ly explained that the team had a few open gym and workout sessions in the weight room.
“This [was] just to get their bodies conditioned and ready to go for the season,” shared Coach Ly.
An everyday practice would consist of repetition and reviewing in-game situations. Coach Ly explains that their practices are organized and split into various groups. Players will build their skills in groups such as hitting, blocking, and passing. To keep his players motivated, Coach Ly teaches them new skills to create a fun, competitive environment.
“We have guys who like to compete so I try to come up with new drills to challenge them at practice,” stated Coach Ly.
Senior Abdul Almuradi who has been on the boys’ volleyball team for two years plays the position of Defensive Specialist.
“For myself, my goal is to limit my mistakes and get better at serving as a team,” stated Abdul.
When asked what he is looking forward to, Abdul is excited to spend time with his teammates and have fun throughout the season.
Something that the team could work on which Abdul expressed is getting louder and cheering with chants to encourage the team spirit.
Another volleyball player, senior Raziel Cabral has been doing this sport for four years. He plays as libero.
Raziel’s goal this season is to beat as many teams as they can.
When asked what brought him to do this sport, Raziel explained “I wanted to participate in another sport with my soccer friends where we can kick the ball.”
Senior Izaiah Gonzalez who plays as a Middle Blocker has been on the team for three years. His goal is to become a First-time All-league position player.
Izaiah wanted to try something new which led him to join volleyball. He is hoping to improve his jump serve and get consistent with spikes this season.
Lastly, Coach Ly adds, “Volleyball is a growing sport in Selma. If you have not been to a volleyball game, I encourage you to do so and support our boys.”
