Selma High held a Winter Rally on Friday afternoon, January 30th. The ASB team put together an energetic time for students in the main gym with a decorative winter wonderland theme. Before the fun began, there were obstacles ASB overcame to make this rally a success. ASB Teacher Mrs. Garcia and ASB Vice President Jonna Trevino-Vasquez shared their thoughts about how the rally went.
“Yes, it exceeded our expectations. Despite a foggy day schedule intruding on the plans, everybody handled it well,” stated Mrs. Garcia and Jonna.
Mrs. Garcia emphasized how proud she was of her students for being prepared and staying positive. The morning of the rally had unexpectedly been changed to a foggy day schedule. ASB students shared that they didn’t expect for there to be a foggy day, but had a back-up plan ready anyway.
“I think the fact that it was a foggy day definitely added a lot of stress to us the day of the rally. We were able to handle this stress with the help of our rally committee who made a back-up schedule for a foggy day,” shared Jonna. “There were also a lot of us that showed up early to school despite the foggy day to help set up the rally which helped a lot.”
Despite the setbacks ASB faced, all the vibes, quality, and enthusiasm were intact. Stepping into the gym, students were instantly greeted with ASB speakers hyping up the crowd. From around the walls down to the floor there were icy blue colors, snowflakes, balloon arrangements, snowmen, and hand-made posters. The gym truly felt like a winter wonderland fairy tale brought to life by the detailed decorations. But like every piece of art, beforehand comes planning and building.
“The process of planning for this rally consisted of scheduling the date making sure it doesn’t conflict with anything else, coming up with a theme, deciding on overall decor, where classes will sit, reaching out to performers and coordinating (Los Paisanos) with stages and floor, writing a script that matches the rally schedule, assigning decor, rally jobs (posters and props)), and deciding and budgeting to purchase things handed out to students.” added Mrs. Garcia. “We held a rehearsal and set up the night before the big day. In the morning we get to school early and rehearse to ensure a good time for our students and staff.”
The ASB team is sure of keeping things balanced and taking suggestions. The team was encouraging and welcoming when it came to games on the main floor. Teachers, students, and athletes were all united while having fun.
“I like that we included people from the crowd for the games rather than focus on the sports people to be our participants,” stated ASB Treasurer Alexis Aguilera.
The ASB team and Activities Director wanted to show the positivity of Bear Nation.
“We appreciate the enthusiasm and support of our campus. In the past we struggled to find volunteers to participate,” stated Mrs. Garcia. “So after our survey results requested increased involvement, students and staff showed up and it was a really fun time. What we see happening on campus comes from our student committees themselves, they make the magic happen.”
