Selma High’s cross country team is nearing the end of its season, with three remaining meets before the league finals. The season has delivered standout moments, most notably at the Hanford Invitational at Hickey Park, where every runner medaled. For many athletes, it was their first time running a 5K, and several set new personal records (PRs). This achievement stood out to both Coach Gonzalez and Coach Manter, who saw it as a reflection of the team’s growth, grit, and notable improvement throughout the season.
Senior Ashley Perez Hernandez, who joined cross country for the first time this year, says it’s been the most rewarding decision she’s made, as it has had a profound impact on her life and allowed her to build a newfound perspective on the way she perceives things. Ashley shared, “The atmosphere is amazing,” said Ashely. The coaches are super encouraging and always push us to do our best.”
Despite previously having played volleyball and soccer, she found cross-country to be the most challenging sport she’s ever done, but also the most rewarding.
“Cross country has taught me some valuable life lessons — like the importance of patience and perseverance. Progress takes time, and having a positive mindset is just as important as physical strength,” expressed Ashley.
Coach Manter has really emphasized the importance of the runners’ resilience and determination.
“We’ve run in 103-degree weather and we have also run in the rain,” she said. “This group doesn’t flinch at the extremes in weather, I love that about them. They show up, run their own race, and give it their all, and never make any excuses.”
Although many did not know each other at the beginning of the season, they have now become like a family. They have all formed a strong team bond amongst each other, challenging one another and constantly cheering each other on.
“They are competitive but use their competitive nature to push one another to excel. They have become a family, and it has been such an honor ending my school day with them,” expressed coach Manter. “I have said it before, but I hit the jackpot when I was given the opportunity to be part of cross country…such a cool environment to be a part of!” commented coach Manter.
Coach Gonzalez highlighted the team’s development throughout the season, noting how proud he is and hoping they finish off just as strong. For him, one of the most rewarding parts of coaching has been sharing his experience and knowledge with the athletes and watching them grow because of it.
“Some of the most memorable experiences are just seeing everyone improve since the start of the season,” He said. “They’ve come a long way, and it’s nice to see that their hard work is paying off.”
Beyond the races and workouts, like the weekly 5Ks, the team has built a supportive environment filled with laughter and happiness. Ashley Perez says the bus rides have been some of the season’s highlights.
“We’re always playing games and telling hilarious stories — it’s something we all look forward to.”
As Ashley and her fellow seniors approach the end of their season, they leave behind the cross country team, carrying with them unforgettable experiences and lifelong takeaways.
