Selma High’s juniors and seniors gathered in the gym on Thursday, October 9, for the school’s annual College and Career Fair. With over 40 colleges, businesses, and support programs in attendance, the event gave students a chance to explore opportunities and learn more about their futures after high school.
The fair was organized through the combined efforts of SHS staff, AVID, and several on-campus programs, each helping to ensure the event ran seamlessly.
Senior Carmen Zarate, an AVID student, explained that the program plays a large role in preparing for the fair each year.
“Basically every year all AVID grades research a certain college,” she said. “Freshman get community colleges, sophomores get CSUs, juniors get UCs, and seniors get private schools and Ivys. We get assigned partners, do Cornell notes, and make a poster board. Then we present it at the college fair, sharing everything we learned about that college.”
Split between third and fourth period, the fair was held in two sessions, allowing every junior and senior to attend during their designated time slots. Inside the gym, booths were arranged to share information about different colleges and programs, offering students a closer look at their options after graduation.
Throughout the event, students visited different booths, asked questions, and gathered information to help them prepare for life after high school. The atmosphere was lively yet welcoming, with volunteers interacting with students and helping everything go according to plan.
Senior Jonna Trevino Vasquez shared that attending the fair gave her a better understanding of the opportunities available after graduation.
“I feel like going to the fair helped me as a senior because it gave me opportunities to learn more about the different colleges around us,” she said. “There was also a lot of information job-wise.”
Junior Katie Reyes Cruz expressed a similar experience, explaining how the fair opened her eyes to new possibilities.
“Honestly, I found the College and Career Fair informative. It opened my eyes to opportunities I didn’t know were there,” she said. “As a junior, it helped me realize there are always job opportunities and many school options to choose from. It helped me feel less stressed about the future. Many of the stands were very welcoming and helpful, and they introduced me to their programs with bright smiles,” Katie said.
Events like the College and Career Fair reflect Selma High’s continued effort to create opportunities for its students and build an atmosphere of collaboration and support that helps them prepare for what’s next.
