September 5, 2025- “Lively, energetic, beautiful,” says Film Club President Ariel “Blue” Hernandez about Club Rush.
Club Rush. A day for clubs and the advertising of them. A day for the people who yearn for experience and community… And a day chock-full of questions and commitment issues.
There were many clubs this year (35, to be exact), perfect for the incoming freshmen. But while many freshmen (and others) signed up for clubs, there were still lots of people that had some lingering concerns. A lot of people, according to Ariel, were afraid of committing to a club. What if it’s super time-consuming? How do I know if I’d even like the club? Those are a couple of questions that float around every new club-goer’s brain. But, to put it simply, it isn’t that serious. This amount of anxiety and nervousness, while valid, isn’t necessary. Some clubs are pretty time-consuming, yeah, but a lot of the time, they will find a way to work around your schedule.
Mock Trial’s Vice President Mia Esqueda-Flores said it herself, “Mock Trial is pretty time consuming, but we do work around sports and other extracurriculars.”
The leaders of these clubs are high school students with busy schedules. They’re not going to make you sacrifice something for the sake of the club. It’s a club, not a cult. And on the question of how you’d know if you like the club or not… Well, there’s only one way to find that out: join it. If the club sounds interesting, join it and go to the first couple of meetings. Being there is the only way you’ll figure out if you like it or not. If you like it? Great. If you don’t? Leave. It’s as simple as that. Clubs aren’t going to make you stay if you happen to want out.
So don’t be scared to join a club. Maybe you’ll end up finding one you like. It’s good to be involved, especially during your high school years. And hey, maybe you’ll even end up finding a career pathway you like (very good for the students who have no idea what they want to do with their lives). There are more pros than cons when joining clubs, and the experience is always good for you. It’ll follow you for the rest of your life.
