This year, Selma High is saying goodbye to four educators as they move into their next chapter of retirement. These teachers include Mr. Garcia, Mr. Johnson, Ms. Loving, and Mr. Wright. These individuals have served a great number of years in the Selma Unified District, and their full experience here at Selma High will be shared and recognized.
Mr. Garcia was born and raised in Selma, California. He started teaching at SHS in 1997, and has served about 30 years in the SUSD. Throughout his time at SHS, he has taught World History, US History, Government, Economics, Psychology, AP Psychology, and Special Education. He has contributed to Ski Club, Indian Club, and Psychology Club. He leaves Selma High committed to the lesson of being a “company man.” He has dedicated time to support students in any way he could, including teaching summer classes, being present at almost every single football game for 29 seasons, offering to transport sports teams when needed, and much more.
Mr. Johnson is from Porterville, California. He started teaching at SHS in 1989 and has served 37 years in the SUSD. He has taught Government/Economics, World History, AP Government, Honors US History, AP United States History, and Academic Decathlon. Throughout his time here, Mr. Johnson has worked to get students to understand their place in American History and in American Government. He is motivated by the students and community of Selma and the support that they have given over the years.
“Everyone has dreams. Do something everyday to make your dreams come true,” Johnson implores.
Ms. Loving is from Morro Bay, California. She started teaching at SHS in 2005 and has served 21 years in the SUSD. She has been in charge of the College and Career Department at SHS and has contributed to the role of Senior Class Advisor.
“My goal has been to always do my best…for all students no matter the circumstances. High school can be tough and challenging.”
Ms. Loving stresses the importance of being involved and making memories in high school. She advises students to make new friends, join clubs, and ask questions.
“My wish for all of you is this: be passionate and reach for the stars. Love your family and friends, and always be willing to try something new,” Ms. Loving shares.
Mr. Wright is from Athens, Greece. He started subbing at Selma High in 1987 and began teaching full time in 1989. He has served 40 years in SUSD. Mr. Wright has taught World History, US History, Government, and Economics. He has also contributed to teaching summer classes, coaching the tennis team, and boys volleyball. Mr. Wright has worked to hold high academic standards and learning in his classroom, and has found himself motivated by the energy of the students of his classroom.
These teachers are known for their passion in their subjects and are admired by many students on campus. Their classrooms have rang with valuable lessons and memorable stories, ones that are cherished by both students and staff. Their work is appreciated and their legacy will live on through the halls of Selma High.
