I watched as he sat there
Rereading his lovers’ words
With every line and curve, his pain turned undeterred
While the pawns in warfare followed out in herds
As the dreaded whistle blew
He knew it was his turn
He laid the letter upon his heart as his ambition grew
His lover had one request, “return,” and he swore to follow through
Now he lies there surrounded by the blues of the gunfire and distant commands
Red seeps out of every place his lover once touched
As the bitter snowfall, began to blister and blacken his hands
Removing the letter from his breast, his love again was untouched
He stared at the declaration
That was covered in his own blood
His lifeless hands clutched it like salvation
As the memories of what was, in flood
His eyes traced every line and curve
Mumbling the words of his beloved
He kissed the paper as his life swerved
He clutched it as his soul shoved
He laid in his disappearing world
Repeating his oath to return
His hand fell with the letter still curled
To see her eyes was his final yearn
His final breath was her name
His final thought was her laughter
His final kiss was with her words
His final duty was to not let go her name
Her worlds held him in a world of shots and loss
Her words held him ‘till his eyes closed
