Feminist Forward, what is it? Typically categorized as a club particular to women, it offers a variety of qualities for all. With its many attributes, including fundraising, food drives, protesting, etc, the club’s main goal is to encourage the advancement of equality. Started by a group of students, the club hoped to offer a helping hand. From highlighting the importance of education to providing resources and allowing members to advocate for those who can’t, the club hopes to remind upcoming members that feminism doesn’t just signify standing up for women, but instead encourages empowerment for all.
By striving to make an impact, club members share their favorite memories and/or influences created through the club.
“The Breast Cancer Drive. We were able to accumulate over 100 items for breast cancer patients, so much so that the facility we partnered with no longer sought a winter drive,” says senior member Karen Urieta. Creating a difference, members actively do their part in improving all around them. Pursuing a better environment, members diligently work together in aiding for those who might not have the resources. Allowing each voice to be heard and offering help in any way possible, members were able to connect with people outside of the school community. “We received a lot of positive feedback on the letters we made for Breast Cancer patients, our words not only offered motivation but allowed patients to feel a sense of humanity again,” says junior member Jasmine Villar. Feminist Forward endeavors to create a safe space. The club wants individuals to be seen and cared for. Where voices were once silenced, the club serves as a bridge between past struggles and future equality.
However, actively being a part of a club doesn’t always come easy.
“It’s difficult to balance all my senior activities and classes along with extracurricular activities, all while organizing events/ fundraisers. But, to me, it’s all worthwhile,” shares Karen Urieta. Although a commitment, joining a new club or remaining an active member provides a place for discussion, a classroom without grades, and altogether a space to foster confidence. Feminist Forward aspires to remain a club of dedicated individuals. The club’s work goes beyond superficial aspects; it creates a bond among members while presenting hope and change for the community. Seeking a world of equality, the club continues to advocate for causes, using not only resources offered but also their true visions and goals for the club.
Movements don’t stay still; they evolve. Equality for all isn’t instant, however through dedication and vision, all is possible. Feminist Forward not only strives for equality but also promotes a stronger and more tethered community.
