It can be quite intimidating and frightening for new staff to start a new job. However, Selma Schools are a place with which Mrs. Acosta has found herself well acquainted.
Mrs. Acosta has begun her journey of teaching 12th-grade Government & Economics at Selma High this year. Located in room 805, students may recognize her as she previously taught 8th-grade English at Abraham Lincoln Middle School for the past eight years.
“I teach seniors this year, so first year tackling Government and Econ with seniors and [I’ve been] enjoying it so far,” Mrs. Acosta explained with excitement. She is thrilled to experience the year ahead while aiming to “make sure my seniors are out there on the field at graduation night and hopefully inspire them to become good citizens”.
Mrs. Acosta grew up as a student of Selma Unified Schools. After graduating from Selma High, she continued her education, attending Fresno State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree and teaching credentials, majoring in social sciences and minoring in English, clarifying her transition from English to History.
Mrs. Acosta always displayed a keen interest in Selma because of her past. As a Selma Bear alumna , Mrs. Acosta carries the ability to not only relate to but also connect to her students on another level. She describes finding comfort and solitude in Selma. “Selma’s home. I went to Selma Unified Schools [and] I always wanted to come home, basically,” said Acosta
Mrs. Acosta finds herself recognizing lots of familiar faces around campus. She recounts her motivation behind pursuing a career as an educator as being her past teachers here at Selma. She has discovered that the wonderful teachers here at Selma High School have not only motivated her to become an educator but inspired her to continue to create that drive and incentive in students to reach their full potential.
“It’s true, like, even though you might not remember fully the content they taught, you remember the person and the impact,” she states. “I appreciate all my teachers at Selma High School.”
She recalls being a former student of both Mr. Garcia and Mr. Shannon Lane, reminiscing about their love and passion for teaching history, which in fact inspired her to become a history teacher. She was also a past student of Mrs. Harris, remembering her kindness and passion for teaching English, which also motivates her to pursue English as well. “Many teachers are not here anymore, but you know, I still remember them fondly,” Mrs. Acosta described with deep sentiment.
Aside from teaching, Mrs. Acosta is a very family-oriented person. She reveals her favorite pastime is enjoying time with her only son, Adan, who just recently turned a year and eight months old. Acosta also devotes herself and her attention to her husband and multiple cats. Mrs. Acosta adores quality time with loved ones, including her little furry friends.
Mrs. Acosta is ecstatic to continue to grow the minds of Selma’s youth and make everlasting connections with students, in hopes of inspiring them to follow their hearts and, most importantly, become morally compassionate individuals.
