Selma High School’s boys’ basketball team started off their 2022-2023 season strong with a current record of 4-1, their most recent win being against the Chowchilla Tribe 75-59. The team is ready to face any challenges their season might toss their way.
“We have a good mix of big and little guys along with new players and returning veterans who all around have great potential,” Coach Vargas states.
This is coach Vargas’ tenth year coaching with Selma, and it’s his fifth year as the varsity boys head coach. Vargas has a strong passion for this game and makes sure to push his players to take each game and their program to the next level.
“My biggest goal for this season is to help take these boys to Valley,” Vargas states.
“I would really like to put a title up on the gym wall for these boys,” Assistant coach Vieira adds
This is Viera’s 16th year coaching for Selma High, and his second year assisting Coach Vargas on the Boys Varsity team.
“I feel great with the start of the season, but I feel that there’s room for improvement but I think by the end of season we will achieve them,” junior Roshan Dail states.
One of Dail’s most memorable achievements while playing was having the opportunity to play his freshman year with varsity.
“I feel we have a strong start to the season but we got to keep working to improve,” junior Luke Machnik states.
This is Macknick’s third year playing on varsity and one of his favorite achievements was starting on varsity his sophomore year.
“My goal for this season is to win league with my team and reach 1,000 current points,” senior Nic Esparza stated.
Esparza is currently the only senior on the basketball team. Esparza has been playing on varsity since his freshman year and is closing out his final season this year. One of his greatest achievements while playing with the Bears has been scoring 65 points in one game.
The Selma High boys’ basketball team hopes to close off their season with a league win, and a new title up on the gym walls.
