The girls Varsity Basketball team continues to shine on the court with an undefeated record in League! The girls are 22-5 in the overall season and are seeded first with a winning streak of 9-0 in the Central Sequoia League. The girls recently played Hanford West on January 29th and won with a close score of 55-51. The also played Selma’s rival team, Kingsburg, on January 17th with a one point victory of 59-58.

Varsity starter Audrey Gonzalez shares her high hopes for the rest of the season.

“Overall, our season has been super good, we are undefeated in league and are working hard for playoffs,” says Gonzalez. “My goals for the season are to win league and make it past the first rounds of playoffs. I also want to perfect my shooting skills and better my defense,” she adds.

Although the girls are continuing their winning streak, there is always room for improvement.

“We can definitely improve on our focus on the court and our catching skills,” adds Gonzalez. She explains her hopes to build closer connections with her team, as sisterhood plays a great role in the success of the Lady Bears.

Junior starter Mireya Silva is a first-year varsity player on the team with several goals for the future.

“Some personal goals I have are improving on my defense. Communication is also super important and something we can always work on as a team,” says Silva. “Our toughest opponents are definitely Exeter and Kingsburg, they will for sure be a challenge,” she adds.

Varsity Coach Romig is more determined than ever to end the season on a positive note.

“This years team is both versatile and greater learners. This allows us to attack and execute in a variety of ways, which guides us to exploit our opponents weaknesses,” explains Romig. “We want to be the best version of what our team can be…this includes winning the league Championship as seeing what playoffs in Division II holds for the Lady Bears,” he adds.

The girls continue to show their bear pride on and off the court with their positive mindset and determined spirit. Be sure to come out and support the girls while they pave the way to playoffs and hopefully a back-to-back Division II Valley Championship.
