As a part of Teacher Appreciation Week, the staff vs. students basketball game took place on May 8th, at the SHS gym during lunch. The staff team came on top victorious, defeating the students by one basket in overtime with a score of 22-20.
The game was primarily dominated by the students, with more than a 10-point difference in the first half of the game. However, the tables quickly turned as the staff started to pick up in the second half. With less than 8 seconds left in the game, the two teams were tied with 20 points. The game went into overtime with Mr. Machnik scoring the winning shot. The crowd erupted in cheers as the staff celebrated their victory on the court.
The game was attended by many Selma High Students who were eager to cheer for their friends and teachers. Principal Lane was the emcee who narrated the game enthusiastically, which encouraged the students to cheer as each team attempted to score.
Going into the game, both teams had full confidence in themselves and were looking forward to having fun. Many of the staff had extensive backgrounds in playing basketball, giving them faith in their skills for going against the students.
“I’m confident that our years of experience—and modest athletic abilities or whatever is left—will serve us well,” shared Mr. Ly. “While the students may have the edge in speed, we’re counting on strategy and teamwork to carry us through.”
Events like these encourage students to engage in school spirit activities and provide an opportunity for students to contribute to Selma High School’s culture.
“It’s great to see the students get out and cheer for both sides and for the students interacting with staff in a different setting,” Mr. Machnik shared.
The game was successful in creating a positive atmosphere on campus as lunch ended, and was an exciting addition to teacher appreciation week for many students.
