Choir–the voices of a multitude of individuals whose voices are woven together to create a tapestry that brings the voices of many together. Choir is a place that allows many to express their creative freedom but also to foster social connections among members.
SHS senior Hernan Vasquez has been a member of choir for two years now. Throughout the years he has participated in choir, he has developed a big sense of admirability for those who sing beside him. Choir emphasizes the importance that lies behind collaboration and communication between the individuals.
“I like to think of our group as one big family,” Hernan Vasquez stated.
Choir is more than singing, it goes beyond the harmonization of an individual’s voice. There is collective effort from each person towards the same goal: the creation of wondrous music. Rehearsals can be very demanding and rigorous for these folks, as it demands a lot of discipline and commitment. As these are the foundational steps towards nurturing young talent, which will help amplify their voices.
“Choir can be pretty tiring,” freshman Karely Flores stated, “Sometimes [we have] to do so many things back to back.”
Even though Choir is very challenging and demanding on the students, it is an outlet for them to explore their love for music. Even through those challenges they push through and bring it all when it comes to competitions. On March 18, 2025 SHS choir received a “Unanimous Superior” at the CMEA Festival, while preparing for their spring concert the following day on March 19, 2025.
“This year– choir has been extremely challenging but successful. So successful that we took the highest ranking at the past two high school choir festivals,” Daniel Almaguer, senior at SHS stated.
The spring choir at Selma High School was filled with many performances along with various spokesmen who shared their experiences and why they joined choir. It was an experience that truly highlighted what that choir at Selma High School is all about.
“Each ensemble really made the night enjoyable and lit up the entire audience’s face. It couldn’t have gone any better,” Daniel Almaguer stated.
Through participation these young singers are able to develop more than their voices. They are able to experience a community where they can feel welcomed and be able to show their talents.
