The Selma High boys’ volleyball team has shown remarkable perseverance this season, demonstrating growth and determination with each game. Their most recent match against Washington Union was a nail-biter, ending in a tough 3-2 loss. Despite the setback, the team continues to show growth, determination, and a hunger for victory. With a record of 3-7 so far, the Selma High boys’ volleyball team is pushing through a challenging season with resilience and determination.
Immanuel Renteria, a junior and the team’s co-captain and setter, has been playing volleyball for four years, including one year in fifth grade and the past three seasons at Selma High. Reflecting on the team’s journey, he acknowledges both the highs and lows, but remains focused on improvement.
“Playing for Selma High has been fun,” Renteria shared. “Of course, we’ve had our ups and downs, but it’s also our third year of playing high school volleyball. Personally, I always focus on good practice. I try to think like I’m in a game to see how my body reacts and how I can learn to control it.”
He also emphasized the importance of team communication, an area they are striving to improve.
“Every sport requires communication, so that’s what we’re going to imply,” he added.
Co-captain Izaiah Gonzalez, a junior and middle blocker, is in his second year playing volleyball and has been putting in extra work to elevate his game.
“During practice, I mainly focus on jumping at the right time to hit the ball and making good contact,” Gonzalez said.
Acknowledging the team’s struggles, he remains hopeful about their potential.
“The season is off to a very rocky start. Right now, we are trying to become more of a team, and that’s our biggest issue,” Gonzalez noted. “I hope to make playoffs this year and hopefully become an all-league player. I also hope that we walk away from this season with a better volleyball program.”
Head coach Ly Ngin has been impressed by the team’s progress and commitment to the sport. Many players joined the team with little to no experience, yet they have quickly adapted to the game’s demands.
“Each player has shown remarkable growth since the beginning of the season,” said Coach Ly. “Their teamwork and overall attitude toward the sport have significantly evolved over time.”
With every game, the team is pushing toward a potential playoff spot, and key matchups, especially home games like “Senior Night,” will be crucial.
“Our athletes are eager to put on a strong performance and draw in a larger crowd,” Ly added. “With each match, we maintain the same mindset—focusing on our strengths and minimizing errors.”
As the season progresses, the team is determined to secure more wins and build a stronger program for future players.
“Let’s make this a season to remember for our seniors. Believe in yourselves, because no one will believe in you more than you do,” Ly encouraged.
With their dedication and continuous improvement, Selma High’s boys’ volleyball team remains determined to finish the season strong, learning from each game and giving it their all on the court.
