Love at first sight went to a tragic bittersweet end. Titanic (1997) is one of cinema’s most beautifully put together films.
To be quite frank, I only watched this movie in its entirety about a year ago. I have said “Oh, I love Titanic” just to try to fit in with everyone because… who hasn’t seen Titanic? I, for one, didn’t want to feel like the odd one out. Then, one fateful day, my whole trajectory of life was literally shifted as a friend (Yari to be exact) randomly asked me if I wanted to watch Titanic. At first I was hesitant because, well… It’s Titanic. All I heard was it was a long three hour movie and my attention span is one of a pea, so I wasn’t really interested but I said yes anyways.
Titanic is a retelling of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, which had sunk in the wee hours of April 15th, 1912. This is Hollywood after all, which means they have to have a captivating story along with a history review. Are we complaining though? No, it’s a good movie.
The movie follows one of our main characters, Rose Dukater, played by Kate Winslet, as she is boarding this new majestic ship that had been deemed unsinkable. Rose comes from a more noble family. You know, one with more money. She is welcomed on the ship with pure luxury and assistance. On the other side of the dock, we have Jack Dawson, played by Leonardo DiCaprio (OH YOUNG LEO WAS SO FINE). He is just a measly third-class passenger, staying in the underdeck.
Just a side note, did anyone else think Jack and Rose were real people? And it was the biggest thing EVER when you found out they never even existed? I was shocked when I found that out. Anyone… Just me? Okay.
This movie literally is the best love at first sight trope and no one can tell me otherwise. “But-” I don’t want to hear it. Silence. Rose was about to end it all at the back of the ship and Jack saved her life! They started being together all the time and oh my lord, he literally brought rays of light into Rose’s clouded life. Jack played off being more wealthy than he actually was to have dinner with her. Rose ran away from her rich life and her fiance, Cal (which I am barely mentioning now because he ain’t even all that) just to be with Jack. Jack introduces her to life under the fancy carpets and behind the expensive doors, and it is so obvious she loves this aspect of her voyage and Jack himself. It was so evident they loved and cared for one another. Even when they both have doubts, ups and downs in their 48 hours of even knowing each other, they solved it together. The comfortability they had with one another as well, especially in the scene where Jack draws Rose while bare and only a necklace. That is literally beautiful!
Right when we all want a happy ending for our two lovebirds, the movie bangs our head against the wall and tells us to wake up.
Fast forward a bit, the Titanic sinks and succumbs to the watery depths of what seems to be like the middle of nowhere.
Jack and Rose are the last ones practically alive, which could be poetic and romantic to most. Rose is settled on a piece of driftwood while Jack is in the water, which is below freezing temperatures might I add. I won’t spoil anything that happens though… and if you already know then shush. Let those who DON’T know find out for themselves. Ultimately, Rose literally needed this calamity to happen to her to be able to put so much emotion into creating a picture of what this ship was, her experience, and the one person she truly loved.
Besides that, watch Titanic. It’s a good movie even though it’s long and Young Leonardo DiCaprio is in it. Why wouldn’t you want to watch?
