Selma High’s Varsity boys basketball team’s most recent game against Immanuel ended with a loss of 48-76.
Although the team has had a losing streak, Coach Jonathan Vargas applauded his team’s composure through this obstacle.
“We’ve had a long losing streak, but the character of our team has never [failed],” Coach Vargas said, “They have all stuck together and continue to play hard every night.”
Despite their losses, the team shows their resolve by starting each match with a powerful mindset and by appreciating the wins they’ve had.
“We didn’t have the season we thought we would have, but a standout moment was beating Central Valley Christian,” said center and senior Kayden Berry, “Our team goal is to play hard every game no matter [if we] win or lose.”
Vargas’ unique coaching style has contributed to the players’ motivation and teamwork throughout the season. He values cultivating a strong relationship with the team, as it’s indispensable to have trust during matches.
“I tried to build a strong relationship with all the players so when the going gets tough, I know that I can count on them and we will have each other’s backs,” said Vargas.
Aside from their strong mentality, the team strategizes and works to overcome their setbacks during their practices by breaking down recordings of their previous matches.
“[We watch] and [break] down film and [make] adjustments at practice,” explained Vargas.
Coach Vargas’ attention is also on strengthening and diversifying the players’ individual skills to prepare them for any situation during their matches.
“[I] always want to play to the strengths of the team whether it’s playing slow on offense and fast defensively,” described Coach Vargas, “As a coach I have to develop players to play different styles.”
Along with strengthening their skills on the court, Vargas is determined to help the players gain the skills necessary to thrive outside of high school.
“My job as a coach is to make sure that the players are set up to be successful in life and turn into great young men,” said Coach Vargas.
The players take note of the skills they have learned on the court that are also vital outside of basketball.
“Playing basketball has taught me discipline,” noted Kayden Berry.
As the season goes on, Selma High’s basketball team will continue to bring their best out on the court.
