TikTok as an app has been around for almost ten years. It is a time capsule of iconic videos, comments, and trends that make you feel nostalgic or think, “Wait, it was THAT long ago?” As I am writing this, TikTok is getting banned as of January 19th, so let’s talk about what TikTok is best known for: THE TRENDS!
UPDATE: I lied. TikTok was down for like twelve hours BUT WE ARE SO BACK.
Whenever you open TikTok, there is always something trending. Whether it be a song, a new editing style or edits in general, a new dance, a certain style that’s just blowing up, and even a “chill guy,” there is always something that is going viral. That means there is always something to talk about as everyone has different ‘For You’ pages. The only flaw is that trends can die very quickly and be forgotten about. But this one trend, this ONE trend has blown up and been thriving since. We’ve all seen them, we all love them. One of the best trends to come out of this clock app is Get Ready With Me TikToks (GRWM).
Upon doing further research, the GRWM trend had actually started on YouTube in 2011, but TikTok boosted its popularity to the max. Just as of now, #GRWM on the app has 15.5 Million posts and billions of pure views. The content ranges from very big well-known people to those who are relatively small.
Get Ready With Me videos have such a nice aura to them. It literally feels like the viewer is on FaceTime with a friend. Viewers feel some kind of connection with the content creator yet you don’t know them personally. It’s like a safe space, a sanctuary where (most) people just find certain things funny.
Get Ready With Me’s don’t always have such a calm demeanor to them, oh no. These types of videos usually come packaged with some type of storytime. The range is universal. The stories can range from something so infatuating like “GRWM to tell you guys how my fiance proposed to me!” to something so baffling like “GRWM to get into a fight!” The creator shares the whole lore of the DRAMA. On top of that, the girl already has a HUMONGOUS black eye. We already know who won and it obviously wasn’t you. (I legit got a TikTok like this).
Think you have an original experience? Maybe someone on GRWM-Tok has shared that experience with you or had something alike! GRWM-Tok has a lot of relatability and it doesn’t always have to be shared through just long one-ten minute stories. Some videos are short and sweet. Some are legit just a person sharing what they’re going to wear and say how they’re not going to have any social interaction, just a day to themselves. Some play little games like “you are blocked if…” and the creator calls out things that irk them or just small little things as jokes, like not liking blue cheese.
A lot of GRWM-Toks are somehow very creative?! For example, there’s filters on TikTok that can choose your outfits, makeup, hairstyle, etc. If anything, it’s fun to watch these people get frustrated when the mighty power of the filter does them dirty.
It all comes back to us as viewers of these TikToks to set the engagement and what we agree to disagree with, or what we find interesting.
A good bedazzling handful of GRWM creators are casual people like us. There are some where they’re living in a place like Beverly Hills and have all this expensive stuff and telling all their rich people stories. That is interesting but isn’t it more fun listening to an irritated 8th grader yelling at the camera about the disgusting PDA with middle school couples while doing their skincare? Now THAT’S content.
Whoever is reading this I would highly recommend watching at least some if you aren’t on that side of Tikitty Tok! It’s a very entertaining form of art.
