Selma High’s first rally of 2025 kicked off with a Nickelodeon theme recognizing winter sports. Each class was a different show from the popular Nickelodeon channel. Freshmen were Bubble Guppies, sophomores were Rugrats, juniors were Fairly Odd Parents, and seniors were Spongebob. Each of the four class sections were decorated to match with that specific cartoon show. Performances from cheer and Los Paisanos were accompanied by fun games in between.
Unfortunately, there were some technical difficulties during the first rally, causing some timing issues. Due to these issues, students and staff were able to see our very own SHS cheer team improvise and perform without any music. Thankfully, with the help of Mr. Lima, the band teacher, leadership was able to get the sound system up and running for the remainder of the first rally and all of the second rally.
“Having to perform a 4:30 minute performance, dance and stunts, without music was a challenge, but once we finished doing the whole performance it felt amazing!” said Hannah Salt, Senior Cheer Captain.
When the music stopped working for the cheer team’s performance they didn’t hesitate to keep going. They counted out their whole dance in eight counts. Having to count, smile, dance, and stunt all at the same time is a difficult skill, yet these cheerleaders got it done without any mistakes.
When asking Damian Vazquez about how he felt about the rally he expressed that he felt the crowd was bored. Damian went to the second rally.
“The VIP sports section had a little bit more hype than everyone else,” he stated. “I think more crowd interaction [in the] next rally will help improve it next time.”
He suggested more crowd games for the next rally, rather than just having individual people go out and participate. He feels like this will make room for more inclusion and engagement. He remarked that Los Paisanos’ performance was his favorite part of the rally.
Valentino Valle, another junior, reflected how this rally certainly wasn’t his favorite. He attended the first rally and felt like technical difficulties interrupted the flow of the entire rally.
“I felt as though the rally was boring. I didn’t really come to the rally thinking it was going to be anything special, and it really wasn’t,” explained Valentino.
“My favorite part of the rally was the teachers participating in the Jellyfish games,” Valle stated.
