Selma High’s varsity football team defeated Morro Bay High School 32-28 to win the Division 5 Championship on November 29th. Which, excitingly, means the Bears now advance to the state playoffs.
Many families, staff members and students were proud of how well the Bears performed throughout the season and many players took pride in how far they went, compared to some less favorable seasons.
For senior Jordan Alvarado, his football experience didn’t exactly go the way he had planned.
“Personally, my season didn’t go the way I wanted it to,” Alvarado explained. “More specifically, stats-wise. But I’m beyond proud of my brothers and I. Nobody thought we would be this far.”
Alvarado then expressed his attitude towards any doubts that the team had received throughout the season.
“Everyone thought it was another 1-9 season,” Alvarado stated, “but we proved everyone wrong. We made history, got ourselves a ring, and put our year in the books.”
Senior Josiah Ochoa then followed up with his agreement with Alvarado.
“The team has been great this season,” Ochoa said. “Making playoffs in general is a big accomplishment, but we went all the way and came back with a ring. It doesn’t get better than that.”
Both seniors expressed their plans after high school and football, sharing that they may not continue their athletic route. The two also shared their personal insight that they felt students could use for both football and high school experience.
“People should be aware of how fast high school flies by,” Alvarado expressed. “It honestly flew by way too fast for my own comfort. But, I’m glad my senior year is going the way it is.”
“People should know about how aware and careful they need to be of their body’s condition and injuries,” Ochoa stated, “since that’s very common in football.”
First-year varsity coach Mitch Francis also expressed his opinions on how this season went, both team-wise as well as shedding light on a few players.
“Our Selma Bear football team has grown and improved by a lot this season,” Francis explained. “We have a group of seniors that have worked really hard and motivated the guys around them and we are seeing the benefits from it.”
Francis then shared some advice he felt any incoming players could benefit from.
“I hope anybody thinking about playing football next year sees how much of a family bond our team has and comes to join.”
