As football season comes to an end, it officially marks the beginning of soccer season. So far the Selma High boys’ soccer team has a current record of 0-2.
The team has begun the season on a rough note losing their first two games. Their first loss was a 1-0 game against Sunnyside and their second loss was a 3-0 against their rival Dinuba. The team is doing their best to learn from their mistakes and hopefully improve their current form. It can be difficult for the players to stay encouraged when putting in so much dedication and effort and not being able to perform as wished.
“I stay motivated by knowing that it is my last year with some teammates that I have grown up with my whole life and I want to make the best of it,” expressed senior Brando Torres.
Torres plays as a right winger and contributes to the team by trying to provide some goals and assists. Lupe Renteria Jr. is also a senior playing his last season for Selma High. As one of the team captains, he strives to be a versatile player, but he mostly plays as a midfielder and winger. He finds motivation from his family and friends.
“Soccer season is the coldest and not to mention we play outside, so coming out to watch can be hard at times, yet they are always out supporting,” says Renteria.
As well as trying to stay motivated, there are many things the team can improve on to become a better and stronger team overall.
“I want to improve on adjusting to fast gameplay and the tempo of the game with my teammates to become a stronger unit as a team,” says Torres.
Although the team isn’t off to the best start yet and is working towards improving their mistakes, they are determined to achieve their goals.
“This year in particular I’m looking forward to playing with my team, and hopefully [winning] the tournament, league, and the end goal, valley,” states Renteria.
The players look forward to working together to attain success for most of the season upcoming.
“I’m looking forward to having fun and being able to compete with my team,” says junior Henry Cabrera.
Cabrera plays as a midfielder and his role is to create opportunities in attacking by passing the ball to his teammates in challenging situations.
With most of the season yet to come, the team is focusing on adjusting their weaknesses into strengths to ultimately put their best effort forward into every game they play.
