The more time people spend with one another, the stronger the bond with these individuals will be. When it comes to the competitive nature of the sport it is crucial for all members to work together as a team. Coaches Clarie Machado and Evander Tamayo play an important role by leading and supporting their players to achieve their greatest potential. Always seeking to give players the right amount of a push to help them expand their limitations.
“I am constantly readjusting to tailor to the needs of the players,” Coach Machado states.“Coach Evander and I assess areas of growth that we can focus on and take it day by day.”
By constantly changing up the routine of the players it pushes for players to adapt quickly, enhancing the way they navigate the challenges that are brought upon them when it comes to competing.
Waterpolo is an aquatic battle field that will only crown those who show their dedication and teamwork. In the high-stakes of securing a victory many players may fall under the intense pressure of proving themselves, leading them to prioritize individual success over teamwork. When the single focus of winning becomes the number one priority for individuals, the spirit of the game begins to get lost. The game gets narrowed down to just a scoreboard losing its initial intentions.
“No matter how good one player may be, it takes a whole team to be great,” Coach Machado states. “I love to hear them communicate and coach each other in the pool during practice and games.”
The collaboration between the players is not just strategic but an essential component for their success. The sport tests and challenges their abilities of collaboration, each player must rely on one another; one tiny miscommunication may be the deciding factor between victory or defeat. “When we’re on the field it can be easy to get negative when we’re losing, however I try to encourage my teammates to keep their heads up,” senior Fatima Aceves says.
The support system that these players have built only is exemplified by the ability to help push each other to better themselves. Fatima adds, “Mistakes are going to be made, it’s part of the game, working through them is what counts.”
Giving up isn’t an option for these girls. They constantly push to grow and better themselves when it comes to growing their skills, not only for the game but also the ways they may apply it to life.
At such a young age these players are able to see the value that lays in teamwork, and perseverance. They continuously prove that they aren’t only players but hardworking individuals who strive for success.
Waterpolo is much more than a sport, it teaches, in the words of Coach Machado, “foundational life skills, such as time management, accountability, and leadership.”
Players and coaches alike can celebrate their achievements, and reflect on the challenges they face, identifying areas for improvement. Alas with the ending of a season, a sense of closure is fostered, being able to reflect on the accomplishments and challenges that were faced regardless of the final standing of the team.
