On October fourth, Selma High held its annual Homecoming game during halftime, where skits created by students were performed alongside their display of floats, and the highly anticipated crowning of the 2024-2025 Homecoming royalty winners took place.
Taking the win of the night was the sophomore Class of 2027 with their country theme.
Winning freshmen Prince and Princess are Noah Alvarez and Zailey Tinajero. Receiving sophomore Prince and Princess is Jony Godinez and Kelly Rocha. Winning Junior Prince and Princess is Sean Hernandez and Jayleen Sisavanh. Finally, receiving the title of King and Queen is Kayden Berry and Alyssa Salazar, respectively.
The theme this year was “Oskie on Aux,” which was centered around different music genres. These included seniors with rock and roll, juniors with latin/mexican, sophomores with country, and freshmen with hip-hop.
Before the float parade began, the crowning of the Homecoming king and queen took place. Last year’s Homecoming royalty recipients Elijah Vasquez and Jasmine Godinez made their sweet return to crown this year’s royalty.
In preparation for the game, Selma High students gathered together within their respective classes and worked tirelessly for weeks to put together a unique skit that would be judged alongside the other classes, and eventually a winner would be determined. They were also responsible for putting together their own float, which was displayed and part of their skit during their performance. Students used popular music, different dance styles, and creative storylines that correlated with their themes.
The freshmen Class of 2028 decorated their float in street-art and graffiti, which represented the time of the 1990s and early 2000s when hip-hop had received the most popularity. Many dressed in sports jerseys as well as t-shirts featuring famous hip-hop artists. Their performance contained music from Beyoncé as well as Montell Jordan. Their skit also took inspiration from the classic comedy film White Chicks and was a real hit with the crowd.
The sophomore Class of 2027 created a fun performance which took place in the Wild West. Students dressed in styles that contained flannels, denim, and cowboy boots. Their routine used hit music such as Footloose by Kenny Loggins and Austin (Boots Stop Workin’) by Dasha to create elaborate choreography and partner-work, which also had the whole student section singing along.
The junior Class of 2026 had a unique storyline for their skit which ended up being very popular at the end of the night. Their performance followed the story of Oskie at his quinceañera, and contained popular Mexican music. Students wore denim and cowboy boots and their float was decorated as if it was the main table of a celebration.
The senior Class of 2025 creatively put together a skit that was a combination of different decades of rock. This included styles ranging from the 1950s such as poodle skirts, and styles from today which included t-shirts showing Nirvana and Pink Floyd. Their skit contained music from Elvis, My Chemical Romance, and Cage the Elephant. Their routine also included a surprising musical performance from one of the students, which was a live electric guitar solo. Their performance was completed with an acoustic guitarist and drummer.
“My experience was very fun,” Carmen Zarate, who performed with the junior Class of 2026, expressed. “Personally, I think the outcome was very well even though we didn’t win. At least we had fun.”
