Each year, Selma High School introduces new teachers and staff onto the campus. One of our new teachers is Ranjeep Kaur, the Punjabi teacher.
Her desire to teach came from her mother, who is now a retired teacher. Growing up, Mrs. Kaur was able to see her mother’s dedication and passion, inspiring her to follow the same career. Mrs. Kaur studied at Guru Nanak Dev University, in Punjab, India. She taught in India for nine years. This is her first year teaching in the United States.
While on the search for a teaching job here in the U.S., Ranjeep Kaur found an opportunity to teach Punjabi at Selma High School, but the energy of the school is what truly convinced her.
“Selma High School is known for its high-quality education and safe learning environment for all students, which inspired me to join,” Mrs. Kaur states.
Mrs. Kaur hopes to build a positive environment in her classroom, along with being able to build good relationships with her students while teaching a foreign language.
With the new environment, there also comes challenges. Because it’s the first time Punjabi is being taught at Selma High, it’s difficult for Mrs. Kaur to keep her students motivated. Luckily, she has her coworkers that have been supporting her and providing her with advice, and she feels that she will be able to overcome this problem.
“My fellow teachers, administration staff, and Principal Mr. Lane helped me a lot, giving me a clear view of the culture and how things work here,” Mrs. Kaur explains.
Outside of school, Mrs. Kaur enjoys spending her time reading and writing poems. She also enjoys shopping and spending time with her family.
Mrs. Kaur is a part of a family of four with her husband, son, and daughter. Her husband is in the trucking business, while her fourteen year old son enjoys spending his time reading books or at the gym. Her daughter is barely five years old and is currently attending TK, otherwise known as Transitional Kindergarten.
