In the bustling hallways of Selma High, a new face has quickly become a familiar and comforting presence for many students. Mr. Ly Ngin, a recent addition to the counseling team, brings not just his expertise but also a deep commitment to guiding students through their academic and personal journeys.
Mr. Ly’s path to becoming a school counselor was not a straightforward one. Graduating from UC Santa Barbara in 2021 with a Bachelor’s in Biology and Sociology, Mr. Ngin initially set his sights on medical school.
However, life had other plans. While preparing for the MCAT, Mr. Ly found himself back at his former high school, tutoring AP Chemistry, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics. This experience ignited a passion for teaching and mentoring students, ultimately leading him to pursue a Master’s in School Counseling at Fresno Pacific University, which he completed in 2024.
Now in his first year at Selma High as a counselor, Mr. Ngin is eager to help students navigate their futures.
“I just want to be able to help kids navigate through their futures and their careers and accomplish their goals,” he shared. His connection with students is one of the things that sets him apart.
Being close in age (25) to the students he counsels, Mr. Ly finds it easier to relate to them, not just academically, but in other aspects of life as well. Outside of counseling, Mr. Ngin is also passionate about sports. A self-proclaimed “big sports guy,” he grew up playing basketball, volleyball, and track. He continues to stay active by playing in a men’s basketball league and recently picking up pickleball. His love for sports has also led him to coach volleyball at Selma High, a role he thoroughly enjoys. Mr. Ly’s enthusiasm for his role at Selma High is palpable.
“The students here really inspire me to work harder,” he says.
He is excited to be part of a traditional high school environment, where he can fully engage in student activities, rallies, and, of course, sports. With his passion, energy, and dedication, Mr. Ly is sure to make a lasting impact at Selma High, helping students achieve their goals and reach their full potential. Whether in his office, on the court, or around campus, Mr. Ly is more than just a counselor—he’s a mentor, coach, and advocate for every student he meets.
