J’Makin Me Happy
By Kimberly Bojorquez
Last year, The Clarion’s co-editors in chief went on a mission to taste test Baskin Robbins ice cream of the month and would report their thoughts to you. This year, we’re saying goodbye to ice cream and saying hello to shaved ice, as we taste test flavors from the Pelican’s SnoBalls franchise!
Pelican’s is known for their wide variety menu consisting of over 100 flavors. I was drawn to the dessert “J’Makin Me Happy”, described to be a blend of tropical fruit. After having tennis practice in 100 degree weather, it was the perfect treat to cool me down. In general, it’s a safe option if you want to choose a snow cone you’re guaranteed to like. My only critique is I wish I could have tasted a bigger variety of fruit as watermelon and cherry dominated the syrup. With that being said, it wasn’t overly sweet, and they provided a perfect ratio of syrup to ice. Not to mention the ice in itself was perfect due to its soft texture.
Overall, I give it a 8/10! It did its job at J’Makine ME happy!
Tropical Biss with a Hint of Coconut
By Yarektzy Navarro
We’ve decided to bring in the new Pelican Snow Cones location in the spotlight by trying their refreshing soft snow cones.
For this month’s Pelican flavor, I decided to try the basic coconut flavor. Now I must say I’m not a fan of very sweet flavors and so this may be the main reason for me picking it.
However, it wasn’t the greatest coconut snow cone I’ve tried. Now don’t get me wrong I absolutely love coconut or honestly anything that has a tropical flavor but this particular one was not a 10/10.
IT WAS WAY TOO SWEET! Maybe I’m too picky, but towards the end it gets so sweet I even got a little nauseous. Yet it was so soft and refreshing for the temperature being 100 degrees, it’s 100 times better than ice cream since ice cream is so much heavier and it makes me feel gross if I must say. Back to the snow cone. It honestly reminded me of the medicine I would get as a kid and it wasn’t the good kind. Yet if you’re a fan of sweet shaved ice then you must try this flavor. I’m not saying it was nasty but it was just too sweet.
So coming from someone who is slightly picky, I would give this a 6/10. Try at your own risk.
