Hello, my name is Malika Basylbekova and I am a 16-year-old exchange student from Kyrgyzstan.
Recently, I’ve embarked on an exciting journey that brought me across the globe to the United States. After two long days of travel, I’ve finally arrived in Clovis where I have been living for the past month with my wonderful host family. They have made the transition to the U.S. easier, making me feel so supported in this new transition. I’m currently a junior at Selma High School and will be studying here for the entire year.
This is an incredible opportunity for me to learn not only in a new academic environment but also to experience American culture firsthand.
I have noticed many differences between the education system in Kyrgyzstan and in the United States. Back home, the focus is mostly on academic achievement and our school days are more structured around core subjects like math, science, and language. Here in the U.S. I’ve noticed that students have choices in what they study and are encouraged to explore a variety of subjects, including electives and extracurricular activities.
It is also fascinating how differently students interact here. In my school In Kyrgyzstan, we tend to be more formal in our relationships with teachers and peers. However at Selma High School, the atmosphere feels more relaxed and students are encouraged to express themselves and engage in discussions. The extracurricular activities, sports, and school events are a big part of life here and I’m so excited to explore new interests during my time in California.
I am thrilled to be attending Selma High School and eager to make the most of my year here. Not only do I hope to learn more about the American education system, but I also look forward to sharing my culture and experiences with my classmates. It has been an eye opening experience already and I am looking forward to what is to come as I continue this adventure.
I hope this year will be full of promises to be unforgettable and I’m ready to embrace every new challenge and opportunity that comes my way.
