From March 11th to March 15th, Selma High had an Athletic Trainer Appreciation week to appreciate SHS’s own athletic trainer Sarah Martinez. Sarah has been the school athletic trainer for two years now.
They started athletic trainer week off with “Don’t Sleep on Your Athletic Trainer” Pajama Day. On Tuesday it was “Dress Like Your Athletic Trainer Sarah Martinez.” Wednesday was “Jersey Day” to show off your favorite team jersey. Thursday “Don’t Ruin Your Future,” and “Wear College Apparel,” and Friday was “School Spirit.”
Mrs. Martinz’s priority is to make sure that all athletes are healthy for the game. She takes the time to check up on athletes and help them with any injuries that have been bothering them. She helps them recover from previous injuries.
“I love being able to help athletes stay healthy and in shape for their sports,” Mrs. Martinez stated. “It’s so rewarding to see them accomplish all they do especially after coming back from an injury.”
She’s always on top of making sure athletes are ready to play year round and are in the best condition that they can be in.
Mrs Martinez also teaches sports medicine at Selma High. In sports medicine, students learn about common athletic injuries and how to evaluate, diagnose, and treat them. They also learn basic bony and soft tissue anatomy of the body and various tape techniques for various injuries.
“She’s a very fun, kind, and helpful teacher and trainer. She helps me whenever I need it academically or through injuries,” stated junior Dallas Luna.
Mrs. Martinez stated that she loves to cheer on her athletes and see them put their heart and soul into the sports they love.
“I will always be my athletes’ number one cheerleader,” Mrs. Martinez stated.
Although athletic training seems fun the biggest challenge is advocating for yourself
“Advocating for myself and the profession of athletic trainers can get frustrating at times because not everyone understands what all athletic trainers are capable of doing, and the degree and certifications we have,” stated Mrs. Martinez.
“She can make you laugh no matter how much pain you’re in,” stated senior Isha Panu.
