When given the opportunity to write about living in any fictional universe, I immediately volunteered with every intention of picking somewhere cool. I could live anywhere. Why not the Marvel Universe with super powers? I could live as one of the survivors in the zombie series,The Walking Dead. However, when you really think about the suffering and tragedy viewers observe characters in popular media go through… it makes a 15 year old girl with little to no life or death experience… second guess these options. Yes, it’s fun to watch characters in the shows we love rise above their struggle, go through their arcs, and become the protagonists or even antagonists audiences can proudly root for. However, when imagining scenarios in those universes coming to life.t’s hard to believe that I, who is deathly afraid of cockroaches, would thrive in an environment that’s fun to watch from an entertainment perspective. It takes two seconds of thinking to realize that all the best moments the characters in these shows have amounts to little payoff in comparison to the suffering they go through to get there. It would make no sense for anyone in their right mind to want to live in a place like that!
However, me being a 15 year old girl, I have a good chunk of time before my own mind is considered fully developed. Meaning, I should get cut a little bit of slack for my decisions. That’s exactly why I would live in the universe of Jujutsu Kaisen, an ongoing anime series that came out in 2020. The story is built around a semi-normal high school boy who happens to possess an enormous amount of cursed energy. (This world’s fuel for ‘cursed techniques,’ like super powers.) When he swallows a cursed relic and is basically bonded with Sukuna, the all powerful king of curses who now shares possession of his body, he is taken to Jujutsu High School. There, talented high school students train to become famous or powerful sorcerers.
Using the fact that audiences only see the universe of Jujutsu Kaisen through the perspective of the main characters in the Jujutsu world, I assume I’d transfer to Tokyo Jujutsu High from America or something similar to that scenario. Even if I’d lived in that universe since birth it would make sense for me to somehow get there from America, seeing as I’m American in this universe and the story takes place in Japan. My reasoning for choosing this anime is one, the main character is the same age as me, and two, I think I’d make a really awesome sorcerer. Still taking earlier thoughts of survival into account, I’ve already come up with three ways I’d survive as a Jujutsu Sorcerer. First, I’d be a secondary character. However, even as a secondary character I would try to be forgotten or blend into the background just enough to be semi-unimportant to the plot until midway through or after the end of season two. This is because background characters can and will be wiped out at random while main or favorite characters are given tragic deaths with no remorse. However, if I can stay in the background but become more important after that time span, much like the character Yuta, I’d be set for success. Two, I would always carry…a gun. I understand the stereotypes around this, however when surrounded by curse monsters in a situation where cursed energy (super powers) reach a limit, it comes in handy. Lastly, as much as I adore his character, I would not get too close to the main character Yuji Itadori. Many popular and strong characters who do this meet a tragic end. Maybe, we could be friends at a distance, but unless I became insanely strong there’s no chance of being even a little bit friendlier than that.
I think my plan is pretty foolproof.
