A movie with so many little hidden details and so much beauty within it, there is no doubt that La La Land brings so much to the screen. It’s a movie full of ups and downs, but making so many people enchanted by its cinematography. Wouldn’t you want to live in such a fantasy world?
To be able to experience being in such an incredible movie (please don’t come at me for not calling it a film), I would never shut up about being with Ryan Gosling ever in my life; obviously joking, this movie really depicts how chasing your dreams can be like chasing “for the stars,” one may say. To have such ambitions in achieving a dream that seems too far to reach, it takes strong determination, something that I personally hope to fully achieve.
Emma Stone plays the main character “Mia,” she’s living on paycheck to paycheck and is just another actress trying to get a gig, just any gig. But she’s so much more than just an actress, she’s really trying her utmost best to get to the top and be a famous actress in her twenties, she’s hanging on to all the hope she has in her abilities to become such a big star.
A girl in Los Angeles, working at a cafe, and being an aspiring actress who will make it big someday, I mean who wouldn’t want this? Not to mention that she went from an enemy to lover with Sebastian Wilder, played by Ryan Gosling, a hardworking jazz musician seeking just as much recognition of his talents as she is. They just radiate the image of fame that isn’t about being a Kardashian or a Youtuber that plays pranks on people, no offense. It’s that old-fashioned, dream-chasing, Hollywood image, a life I totally dream about with my airpods still in my ears playing Lana Del Rey. Aesthetics aside, they are truly hardworking people who at first glance, it’s already clear that they’ll achieve beyond their wildest dreams in their futures. Being dead set on my future career would honestly be an amazing luxury for me, it would definitely make high school a lot easier that’s for sure.
My favorite scene from this movie is of course when they are at the Griffith Observatory, floating into the stars with no care in the world, just two aspiring stars shining brighter than other star in the night sky. Of course they don’t only dance in this scene. They dance in almost every other scene, which would honestly be a fun workout for me. But in the movie, the actors make it seem so effortless, especially Emma and Ryan in their scene after the party, under the dark purple sky. They go from quarreling one second, and the next they’re tap dancing away. They’re taking a dance off to a whole new level, this probably would have been the only thing appealing to me if I were back in elementary school and just watched Camp Rock.
And going back to the sky, this setting creates an atmosphere of tranquility that’s recurring throughout the movie. I would love to be living in a world where my days are bright and beautiful, and my nights are just that but much more enchanting. It’s like living in a wonderland, surrounded by dark vibrant colors, it would be ten times better than the “California” I live in.
The biggest reason I would want to live in their world is solely because in the end, they achieve what they’ve ever wanted most in their life. They worked hard, helped each other along the way, and made it past challenges with successful careers. In the soundtrack of the movie, Emma and Ryan sing the lyrics “City of stars, are you shining bright just for me?” I like to think that for the two main characters, they are stars. Not just a star in Hollywood or in the music industry, but stars in their hearts who put themselves first when they knew it was necessary.
Sounds sappy, but it’s realistic, which is something I love about this movie because it incorporates both reality and fantasies. In this case, their fantasies became their biggest dreams, thanks to their time together in a city full of stars that makes dreams shine brighter than anyone could ever imagine.
