Selma High’s boys’ soccer team’s last game was on February 14th against Madera South High School. To the dismay of players who felt they had put in a lot of effort, the game ended with a draw of 3-3.
“Even though we [put up] a fight until the last minute, a first round exit in [the] playoffs is very disappointing,” expressed center midfielder Jesus Avendano.
However, the players acknowledge the mistakes that led to their loss and strive to learn and improve from their faults.
“This season I grew mentally and I learned not to take things for granted,” admitted Jesus Avendano.
“I feel like us, as a team, could’ve fixed some simple mistakes to prevent us [from] losing,” continued center midfielder and center back Eduardo Hernandez.
Apart from learning skills on the field, players also acquired lifelong lessons of teamwork and camaraderie.
“I have learned that our soccer program isn’t just about soccer when you’re on the team,” explained Eduardo Hernandez. “You’re a part of a family who will always bring you joy and push you to your highest potential.”
Coach Ruben Zamora has seen the effort the players have put into the sport all year and praises their improvement.
“A lot of our players grew up throughout the year and [they] made great improvement skill-wise and also attitude-wise,” complimented Coach Zamora.
Undeterred by their stumbles, the team continues to show determination towards next year’s season.
“Lots of them showed great character, which excites me for next year,” said Coach Zamora.
The team also conveyed a hope towards a season filled with more victorious matches. Coach Zamora works to improve the team’s weaknesses to achieve that goal.
“When they engage together and hold each other accountable this team will be one of the best in the valley once again,” advised Coach Zamora.
As the soccer season came to a close, players like senior Eduardo Hernandez appreciated the time spent with fellow team members.
“I am happy to be able to experience my last high school game with such an amazing team with a bright future,” said Hernandez.
