We all have those random things that bother us. My thing is people who glorify the “hood.” What is a hood? Google defines it as “an underclass big-city neighborhood, with high crime rates, low-income housing and a general mentality of despair and hopelessness.” I would say that’s pretty much accurate.
Why do these people who glorify the “hood” bother me? Because many of them don’t even live in a “hood.” They have a loving family and live in a very nice home, nowhere close to living the hood lifestyle they glorify. They don’t suffer the true and harsh realities that come from living in this lifestyle.
I bet you that if I was to interview one of these people they could not give me a good reason as to why they glorify the hood. Maybe they do it because of pop culture or maybe because they want to look tough. Truly, they don’t benefit at all from this lifestyle. Their parents have provided them with a life full of opportunities. They could easily have a life where they go to school safely, join an extracurricular and hang out with friends. But no they’d much rather be in the streets. It’s crazy seeing people who were born in a safe and healthy environment choose a lifestyle that should never be admired.
I understand everyone has their issues and I’m sure not every family is perfect, but many of these people have genuinely supportive families or parents who have built the foundation for them to prosper in life. Why would these people want to live an opposite and violent life rather than the one given to them? I will NEVER understand what it is about crime and poverty that attracts them and makes them want to leave a green grass home and safe neighborhood.
Even more confused do I become when they want to join a gang. Many of these “hoods” which gangs claim are so far from one another. I find it absolutely absurd that you have to travel across town to look for issues—yes, LOOK for issues, because no way a “hood” miles from you is a threat.
If going by Google’s definition, which sounds pretty accurate, many of these “hoods” aren’t even hoods. If you walk down the street from them you’ll find yourself in a nice neighborhood without very low-income looking homes. I would say the people in the neighborhoods are well off.
Overall, my root issue with these people is that they’ve never lived the true reality of a “hood.” They basically do it for no reason. People who are genuinely from these places are trying to “make it out,” but it’s crazy that some people are trying to “make it in” to the crime and poverty infested sides of town.
Doesn’t that sound crazy? Yes, I’ll just never understand.
