Selma High School had “Sweethearts’ Week” from February 13th-16th, during the week of Valentine’s Day. Students celebrated love, friendship, and admiration for one another by dressing as their type, coordinating their colors with relationship status, wearing date night attire, and “dreaming about love” in pajamas on Friday. Leadership senior Alexis Viveros said pajama day was (and always is) her favorite “because everyone participates.”
Thanks to leadership, Sweethearts’ Week was also filled with an array of lunchtime activities like karaoke and couples’ trivia. They also hosted a couples’ fashion show and drawing quiz to add to the festivities. As an incentive, winning couples won tickets to the Sadies dance, which also took place in February.
During the couples’ trivia on Wednesday, students lined up, facing one another with whiteboards and racing to answer questions about their partner. Couples and pairs of friends participated in the activity, showing everyone was welcome to play.
“Events like this are held to promote school spirit, so it was fun to see students getting excited and involved in their love-themed week,” according to Alexis Viveros.
In addition to the fun outfits and games on campus, leadership filled the hallways with hearts and loving messages. Giant conversation heart posters read, “Be mine” and “Xoxo.” Uniquely, leadership also made sure each and every student’s name was written on a paper valentine in the front of the school, stretching into the main hallway. Freshmen were grouped in red, sophomores in purple, juniors in white, and seniors in pink.
Many students stopped to appreciate these tributes on their way to class, pointing out their friend’s names and diligently searching for their own. In doing this, leadership was able to make everyone feel loved and special on Valentine’s Day.
“I think we wanted to try something new,” Viveros explained, “We go to CADA every year and got this idea to decorate the school from there. A lot of people liked the hearts, and they liked seeing their names.”
This sentiment is not the first time leadership has attempted to brighten our school hallways and activities. They make posters for sports, senior events, rallies, and more. Signs saying, “You’ve got this!” from finals week still linger in the hallways, and the sense of encouragement from them, therefore, remains as well. Much of the credit is due to the leadership advisor, Ms. Garcia.
“The self-affirmations are from Ms. Garcia, who is very into mental health. She was the one who asked us to make posters during finals season to calm down people’s stress,” said Viveros.
How inspiring it is that the staff and students at Selma High School care about our well-being and success enough to leave messages of encouragement and love in the hallways for Valentine’s Day and for many celebrations to come.
