Selma High’s varsity boys’ basketball has performed well throughout the season so far. With a current overall record of 15-9, their most recent win was against Sierra Pacific 62-55. In the current standings, the team is first in the Tri-county Kings Canyon League with a 4-1 score.
The team’s approach to success has been built around their outlooks.
“We talk about coming in with a positive attitude and a hard working attitude and they seem to respond really well,” stated varsity coach Vargas.
This year marks Vargas’ seventh season as the varsity boys basketball head coach. His approach to coaching emphasizes success for his players both on and off the court. He is fixed on bringing out the best in the team. Guiding the boys team to values beyond the court’s fold.
“I try to teach the boys life lessons and how to become great young men in our society,” said coach Vargas. “Respect, communication, and accountability are the three main cores I try to instill in the boys.”
Even among their success, the boy’s have led many obstacles during their season. Learning to look past the losses has been a part of their journey.
“We faced a wall with some tough losses and we had to learn how to turn the page and not hold onto some of these tough losses,” admitted coach Vargas.
The varsity boys play with admittance and awareness to their weaknesses. Coaches guide the team to tailor to the strengths of the players.
“We are a small team. Our biggest player is 6 ‘1” so we like to play fast and put a ton of pressure on the ball,” Vargas said.
The team’s efforts have been consistent. Players work towards improving their own individual skills.
“The skills I think are important are good footwork and being able to take care of the ball,” stated Selma High junior Jeremiah Posada.
Posada is part of the boy’s varsity team. He plays guard, running the team’s offense.
Ultimately, the boy’s team pursues high goals for their season.
“Some of the team goals are winning the league, then going to Selland Arena,” said Posada.
With these ambitions, the boy’s work hard on enhancing their skills as a team. Basketball requires collegiality and cooperativeness within teammates.
“We work towards those goals by showing up ready to work at practice,” Posada said.
The team executes practices that involve playing with fundamentals. According to Posada, they prepare for intense rivalry games, regardless of who they go against.
Overall, the team continues to play in the League. Hopeful in what the future will bring and confident in the skills they continue to hone. They aim for success in every step they make. Ambitious in their plans.
“Our goals are to win our league, make a run in the playoffs and hopefully win a section title” coach Vargas added.
