On January 13, the Mexican Dance program showcased their skills at their very anticipated Winter Recital. There were two different shows, the matinee show that started at 3:00 p.m., and the evening show that started at 7:00 p.m..
In previous years, the recitals had taken place in the ALMS’ cafeteria, however, this year the show was presented in the gym. The recital was free of charge which increased the size of the audience.
Assistant Instructor, Mr. Garcia, considers the gym to have been a favorable space for both the performers and the audience.
“The students were also able to watch the show, unlike other times, when they have had to stay in the room,” Mr. Garcia stated.
Senior Hailey Hurtado, an advanced-class performer, recognizes that a bigger audience resulted in a better performance.
“A bigger audience helps set a better vibe and makes us performers have more of an adrenaline to perform,” Hurtado commented.
Sophomore Isaac Espino, who performed in both shows, felt really good presenting all the dances learned during the fall semester to such a vast audience. Although he was pleased with his performance, there are some things that he wishes to refine for the Spring Recital.
Espino stated that in order to display a better performance he wants to, “[Continue] practicing more and taking it more seriously.”
The program faced several obstacles leading up to the performance. However Belen Hernandez, a senior in the advanced class, believes that they were able to overcome these challenges.
Hernandez explained that communication and teamwork were the key to overcoming the difficulties presented before the show.
“If I needed to remember a step, I would go to my partner or my friends from the same region and they would help me out before we got on stage,” Hernandez recalls.
Hurtado also wishes to see “more bonding with the students and the teachers” in order for the class to keep improving as well as growing.
Belen Hernandez recapitulates that the ultimate goal for the Mexican Dance program is “to keep improving in order to continue showing our beautiful culture.”
