Selma High’s Drama Club put on a show on Thursday the 25th in the dining hall. Starting at 4 p.m., what seemed to be a regular night out at Cafe Muuurder *scream, evil laugh, ding* (the proper way to pronounce the name) for the audience turned into a night of mystery and intrigue. The audience was forced to bring out the Sherlock hats and magnifying glasses to investigate the sudden murder of one of the guests.
As the story goes, a group of sisters had come to Cafe Muuurder *scream, evil laugh, ding* to celebrate the birthday of their very dear sister, whom they love sooo much, Rosemary. Within the group there is Marjorie, the no-nonsense career woman. Melanie, the calm, peace-loving hippie. Valerie, the ditzy, dressed head-to-toe in pink, valley girl. Volleny, the tomboy trucker. And last but not least, the birthday girl herself, Rosemary, the dramatic diva that must have her way.
“I would say that my character is very unlikeable and dramatic,” revealed Monika Trevino, the senior who played Rosemary.
The sentiment seemed to be shared when the Maitre’d, Chef, and Waitress lead the group to the bathroom after Rosemary’s dramatic freakout over her proximity to water (to which she is apparently allergic to) and they come back missing their sister. They reluctantly try to call the police and two seconds later a detective comes rushing in. The eccentric detective declares Rosemary has been murdered, and the mystery begins. They reason that they are all suspects (including the detective as his sudden entrance was suspicious, along with the reveal that he had unpleasantly met Rosemary before) so they turn to the audience for help.
The audience was given a list of questions over the span of dinner (which consisted of spaghetti and cookies for dessert) to gather information, but they had to be careful, only three questions are allowed for each suspect.
The mystery seemed to be coming to a close when the guests were asked to write their votes and place them inside the vases on each of the tables, yet before the votes were collected the Maitre’d made a shocking discovery that leads her to the culprit. Said culprit can’t contain her secret anymore and the Waitress reveals herself gleefully. As she dives into her tragic encounter with Rosemary a while back the entire cast sits around the table to celebrate the end of their sister.
Their joyful reality comes crashing down when Rosemary saunters back in and airily admits that maybe being allergic to water is not a thing, oblivious to the devastated horror around her. The show closes with the Waitress trying to attack her in sheer rage as Rosemary continued to be bossy and demanding.
The show was put on by Drama Club to help raise money for their trip to New York, yet it turned out to be an even bigger success than they thought.
“The audience was so engaged and had a great time interacting with the actors. We received a lot of positive feedback,” shared Mrs. Saponara, who directed alongside Mrs. Nieves.
Maybe next year will see the return of Cafe Muuurder *scream, evil laugh, ding*.
