Selma High School’s third annual Turkey Bowl took place the week before Thanksgiving Break from November 13th through November 17th. Students formed teams to compete in a flag football tournament during lunch. Every day at the JV Practice Field, teams faced off for the chance to win a trophy with their team’s name engraved on it.
On the first day of the Bowl, team AP Elite won against Little Caesars, which has no affiliation with the actual food chain. On the same day, The Hogs won against Valley Bears. On November 14th, The Gobblers were defeated by the team Fresno State, which has no affiliation to CSU Fresno.
On November 15th and 16th, the competitors of the final game were decided. The Hogs won their preliminary game against AP Elite. Meanwhile, Fresno State won a second game against The Ball Snatchers.
The Hogs then competed against Fresno State at the championship game on Friday, November 17th.
The game stretched on until the final seconds, but after extra time on the clock, the game ultimately led to The Hogs’ victory. This close match resulted in cheers from the audience and The Hogs’ victorious team members, who had won for the second year in a row.
“We were really looking forward to this [since] we’ve won every single year,” said The Hogs’ member Hugo Lopez.
The team’s winning streak encouraged the team and gave them confidence in their abilities.
“We already knew we would win from the start,” junior Jordan Alvarado described as he celebrated with his teammates.
