College Knowledge Week took place from November 13th through the 17th. This week was dedicated to bringing awareness to the prospect of college and the steps you can take to apply. The main focus was to help students, namely seniors, get ready for college applications through a series of workshops run by the academic counselors.
“As a first-generation college student, the workshops were of great assistance. I was able to freely ask questions as well as receive feedback on my writing. I am thankful for the guidance provided as I am no longer anxious about completing my applications or turning them in,” shared senior Julisa Ruiz.
Within these workshops, students were able to receive help with their FSA ID, college applications, and anything else they might have questions about relating to college.
In order to get more students involved, College Knowledge week was accompanied by dress-up days curated by AVID. On Monday students were encouraged to “Dream Big” and wear their pajamas to school. Students dressed like their friends on Tuesday, signifying how everyone is going through this process together. Career Day was on Wednesday, students wore clothes reminiscent of what they would wear in their dream profession. Students showcased many different college hoodies and shirts on Thursday. First generation teachers and seniors were also acknowledged on this day. Pins that read “First Generation College Student Congrats” were passed out during fifth and sixth period for students and teachers to wear. Friday was “SHS Spirit Wear,” students wore black and orange to pay homage to Selma High School.
Along with dress-up days, AVID expanded their involvement by providing more information about college. Everyday the bulletin supplied facts provided by AVID, such as, “Although prestigious universities are more expensive, they are also more capable of offering extensive financial aid. You could end up paying less by going to a private school than going to a public school,” and, “Community College is FREE your first two years.” “Did You Know” posters were hung up throughout the school that would help give students college insights by providing facts about certain colleges or listing definitions of college application vocabulary.
“Seniors, leave no door of opportunity close. Apply, apply, apply!” advised the senior AVID teacher Mrs. Manter. “Try to avoid the world of comparison and be proud of your journey and the actions you are taking to prepare for a bright future! Leave no room for regrets or ‘what if’s’ YOU GOT THIS!”
Overall, College Knowledge Week was an informative and productive week for our current seniors. Anyone who is about to embark on the same journey next year (juniors we’re looking at you) should consider participating.
