On November 3rd the Selma Police Department competed against the Selma High staff in a basketball game as a fundraiser for the girls’ and boy’s teams.
The Selma police team, called “Selma PD,” consisted of 11 players including the Selma sheriff. The staff team consisted of 13 players with, not only the teachers of Selma High, but the girls’ and boys’ varsity basketball coaches as well.
The officials of the game included Selma’s athletic director, Randy Esraelian, and history teacher, Ed Vieria.
The game was comprised of four quarters, each lasting ten minutes with a running clock.
At the start of the game the staff were quick to take the lead with the girls’ varsity head coach, Brianna Alvarez, making a quick three-pointer. However, as the first quarter progressed the game quickly changed in Selma PD’s favor, and it resulted in the Selma PD taking the lead with 11-5 by the end of the first quarter.
However, going into the second quarter the staff team came out with dedication and shortened the Selma PD’s lead from 16 to 17. Nevertheless, it was not enough to get ahead of the Selma PD, who was still winning by the end of the first half.
At halftime there was a skills competition between the girls and boys varsity basketball teams. The first was a competition in which the contestant had to dribble through cones and make a layup, free-throw, three-point, and a half court.
This consisted of three players from each team. The selected players from the girls basketball team were Julia Cuevas, Daviana Chavez, and Chantel Rodriguez. The three boys chosen from the boys basketball team were Roshan Dail, Javon Hicks, and Matthew Esparza. In all three rounds the competition was tied, and there was ultimately no winner.
The second competition was a 3 point shooting competition. This included two players from each team having to shoot from 5 spots around the three point line. From the girls team, the players selected were Isha Panu and Reanna Garcia. From the boys team, Aaron Ramirez and Luke Machnik were chosen.
In the first round, Isha Panu beat Aaron Ramirez and, in the second round Reanna Garcia lost to Luke Machnik. Once again, it resulted in a tie for the final competition.
The staff came out energized and confident for the second half with a strong desire to win the game. The Selma PD was not there to play around and were confident they would take the win.
The Selma high staff started off with an amazing first couple minutes, but the lead they created slowly started to close as the Selma PD began scoring and was close to taking the lead.
By the end of the third quarter the score was tied 33-33, which, to the teams, really meant the game was back to zero-zero and the last quarter was really what determined who took home the win.
In the final quarter with the energy high, not only from the crowd but the players as well, the Selma High staff brought the dedication needed and took home the win. By the end of the game, the final score was 55-42 in favor of the Selma High staff.
