Selma High School hosted the annual Homecoming Jam on Monday, October 16 at Staley Stadium. This year’s Hoco Jam was jam-packed with lively musical performances by many of Selma High School’s entertainment groups.
Selma High’s award winning Black Bear Brigade started off the rally with a musical recital. Choir, Drama, Varsity Cheer and Los Paisanos, SHS’s Mexican Dance group, performed between Powderpuff games.
Many of these performers felt anxious as they walked onto the playing field, but persevered and had fun while at it.
“There’s still a little nervous side to it, seeing all the people out there. It’s exciting but nerve wracking,” explained senior Perla Rangel from Los Paisanos.
Despite the warm weather, many performers also enjoyed the time they spent performing at the rally. Some even viewed it as a moment of enjoyment and relaxation.
“We’ve been having a rough month since it’s ‘Bandtober,’ so we’re always busy now,” said junior Mikaia Orosco of The Black Bear Brigade. “The rally was like a fun event that we did.”
Not only did performers have fun, but spectators enjoyed spending time with their friends and family.
“This event was a 10/10. It doesn’t get any better than this,” spectator Bella Guerra praised the Homecoming event.
However, a Homecoming event is not complete without Hoco Royalty. Royalty candidates Eduardo Soria & Mariah Gonzales, Jasmine Godinez & Elijah Vasquez, and Marina Hernandez & Damian Alvarez performed their choreographed dances to rally support for the upcoming royalty elections.
Meanwhile, the underclassmen royalty were crowned at the event. Addyson Fernandez and Carson Maldonado were selected as freshmen Princess and Prince. Alexis Aguilera & Cassius Sesate were crowned Sophomore Royalty, and Angel Pacheco & Yasmine Abdulla were selected as Junior Royalty.
Selma High students from every grade also participated in the annual Powderpuff Tournament. The juniors won the first game against the freshmen, while the seniors won Game Two against the sophomores. The seniors and juniors then faced off one last time during the final Championship Game. The seniors seemed to have the upperhand until the final moments of the game. With mere seconds on the clock, Daviana Chavez scored a touchdown, earning the Class of 2025 the Powderpuff trophy for the second year in a row.
Apart from entertainment, the Hoco Jam had plenty of food and drinks for guests to enjoy. Selma High School classes and sports teams like basketball and AP biology hosted food booths. Guests and participants alike enjoyed the time spent at Selma High School’s Hoco Jam.
