From October 16th through the 20th, Selma High commemorated Homecoming Week. With multiple events occurring throughout the week, staff and students could showcase their school spirit through participation.
Prior to the start of Homecoming Week, the Homecoming Dance was held on Saturday, October 14th. The senior class presented the theme of the Roaring 20s.
“I think the theme was spot on,” expressed senior Ronni Luna. “They had bottles of cider and cute glasses [and] the areas to take pictures was really cute too.”
As the dance kicked off the Homecoming festivities, Hoco Jam began on Monday, October 16th. Selma High’s ASB presented a Powder Puff Tournament and Community Rally that evening. All the grades competed with the boys cheerleading and the girls playing in the Powder Puff Tournament for the Powder Puff trophy.
In the first game, the freshmen went against the juniors, and the juniors took the victory. In the second game, the sophomores went against the seniors, and the seniors won. Within the last few seconds of the final game between the juniors and seniors, the juniors defeated the seniors taking the Powder Puff trophy for the second year in a row.
“It was my first time doing [Powder Puff] this year and I regret not doing it [in] past years,” shared senior America Ruiz. “It made me connect with other students who I’ve never really talked to.”
Alongside the Powder Puff Tournament: Band, Varsity Cheer, Choir, Los Paisanos, and Drama Club performed. Rally games were set up and the top three senior Homecoming King and Queen candidates: Jasmine Godinez and Elijah Vasquez, Mariah Gonzales and Eduardo Soria, and Marina Hernandez and Damian Alvarez, performed their couple dances. The Homecoming Princes and Princesses of 2023 were also crowned. Our Homecoming Princes are Jiang Reyes Barrita, Carson Maldonado, Cassius Sesate, and Angel Pacheco. The Homecoming Princesses are Chloe Hollabaugh, Addyson Fernandez Garfield, Alexis Aguilera, and Yasmine Abdulla.
As the week went along, leadership also had a designated dress-up for each day. Monday’s dress-up day was to represent 2003. Tuesday’s dress-up day represented the USA and the past presidents. Wednesday’s dress-up was Generation Day, where freshmen dressed as babies, sophomores dressed as children, juniors dressed as working adults, and seniors dressed as senior citizens. Thursday was Western Day, and Friday’s dress-up was Student/Teacher Mix-Up Day or Pink Out.
“My favorite dress-up day was Generation Day because it was interesting seeing all the grades dress up differently,” expressed sophomore Jonna Trevino-Vasquez. “I dressed up as a toddler.”
To culminate Homecoming week, there were multiple events during the Homecoming game on Friday. The score of the Junior Varsity game was 28-12. The score of the Varsity game with Kerman was 47-21 Although SHS lost the varsity game, it won the JV game and there were still many events going on to enlighten school spirit.
During halftime, all of the grades competed in a float competition. The overall theme was Oskie Travels through Time. The Class of ‘27 performed on the theme of the 90s. The Class of ‘26 performed for the 2000s. The Class of ‘25 performed for the 70s. Lastly, the Class of 24’ performed for the 50s. The Senior Class of ‘24 won first place in the competition.
“My favorite part was just getting to connect and having fun overall,” mentioned Ruiz. “Towards the beginning, it was kind of stressful trying to get things done, making sure everyone was there at practice getting things done, but towards the end it was all worth it and we ended up winning.”
After weeks of campaigning, it was then time to crown the king and queen. Drumroll please!!! With the majority votes, Selma High’s Homecoming King and Queen are Elijah Vasquez and Jasmine Godinez!
“Running for queen was an experience of its own in which I learned a lot,” mentioned Godinez. “There are many people willing to help regardless of what they get in return. It was truly something heartwarming I was able to experience.”
“It feels great and exciting to be Homecoming King,” shared Vasquez.
To culminate this event, Selma High also honored AP Calculus AB and Physics instructor Mr. Mitchell as Alumnus of the Year.
Homecoming was a night to remember, and the seniors made sure to enjoy their last homecoming!
