Senior Sunrise was held on August 30th in the Staley Stadium. For many years this has been a Selma High School tradition, where the senior class comes together to watch the sun rise at the beginning of the year.
Each year this event is organized with the hopes of providing a good start to students’ final year of high school.
“The goal was to get as many seniors to come to the sunrise to celebrate the beginning of the end,” stated Alexis Viveros, the Senior Class President who helped coordinate the event. “We wanted to bring all the seniors together and continue this tradition.”
Starting as early as 6:00 a.m., students arrived at the stadium with blankets and snacks. Seniors got to hang out with their friends, take photos, and for many, this was a special moment that brought people together.
“I did enjoy it, it was a cute bittersweet memory to hold and remember,” explained Destiny Moreno.
Not only students attended this event though, several staff members stopped by in order to spend time with the seniors they’ve created bonds with.
“I went to Senior Sunrise because I was invited to go and I wanted to be a part of something special with some of my favorite seniors,” stated Mr. Filkins.
This event brought about lots of self reflection for the Class of 2024. While the event was meant to celebrate the students, for many it was a wake up call that this really is their final year.
“The little girl inside [of] me is screaming because I’ve always dreamed of being at this point of my life,” explained Anely Ortega. “Part of me is sad because it’ll all be ending but the other half is happy for the new beginnings it’ll open for me and my classmates.”
At last, the sun has risen on senior year for the Class of 2024 and as these students approach graduation, Senior Sunrise is one of the many moments they will gladly look back on.
