Selma High hosted its annual College and Career Fair on September 20th from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The fair’s purpose was to introduce students to various possible opportunities for college and career paths. The quad was filled with booths and presentations from numerous colleges, programs, and our very own AVID students.
“The purpose of the Selma High School College and Career Fair is to inform both parents and students about higher education and prospective opportunities that are available both in the private and public sectors,” said Ms. Nancy Vasquez, who, along with the entire Counseling Team, worked together to create this event.
Representatives from colleges spoke to students about what their college had to offer, providing information and answers to any questions that were asked. Career booths paved the way for possible job opportunities as students had the chance to explore what might interest them, some programs even offering internships. AVID students prepared presentations about numerous colleges and universities, ranging from community to private colleges.
There are many who think that the fair is a wondrous way to connect and branch out.
“In my eyes, anything that brings the community together and promotes career opportunities and higher educational opportunities is a win-win,” Mrs. Manter, P.E. and Senior AVID teacher, shared.
The students who attended also shared the same sentiment.
“I think it was a helpful way to find more opportunities,” said junior Destiny Romero.
However, it wasn’t all just presentations and pamphlets. Several booths had fun games to win prizes, there was a raffle hosted by the school and a variety of food trucks.
In total the turnout was extensive, there had been 56 participants and over 264 students had attended. Overall, the event proved to be a success in helping students of all grades learn more about an assortment of opportunities available to them for their future.
