What Is Too Much Government Intervention?
May 15, 2020
I believe the government has overstepped in its response to this pandemic. The rights we have been guaranteed in the constitution are the most important thing to us, but during this coronavirus pandemic, governments overstep is seen in their new guidelines and the stimulus packages.
We’ve seen this from people on both sides of the aisle. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott stated that abortion was an elective surgery and therefore it cannot be done during this pandemic. Although as I am pro life, it is still a woman’s right because the Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade. Therefore this is the suppression of an American’s rights. In Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer in the wake of the armed protests at the capital, wants bar guns to be allowed on capital grounds. At the moment it is allowed because Michigan is an open carry state. As we all know that is a very sensitive topic throughout American history. The right to bear arms is spelled out in the second amendment of the constitution. The actions of these Governors are purely a political move. They are suppressing the rights of their citizens to push their political agenda further.
In these examples the rights of Americans are being suppressed. It is our duty to do something about this, but I do not agree with the way these protesters are. I believe in the first amendment and people’s right to assemble but it needs to still stand within the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. The “IMEH” and University of Washington says that California should be ready to reopen in about a week (May 18th). In many places it seems we are close to the end of this so we just need to hold out a while longer.
Like many others, when I heard we would be receiving a federal stimulus package my thought was free money. But the problem with saying that is it is not free it is someone else’s money that they had paid to our government. When I see this all I can think about is, is this how we fall for socialism as a country. Many Americans don’t see that problem that comes from us receiving this “free” money, because they don’t realize it will have to be paid back somehow. This is the start to a terrible thing called socialism which has devastated every county it has touched.
I am not going to lie and say my family did not take advantage of this. We received the stimulus package and my father is getting unemployment money due to the coronavirus. Whereas my mother is still working because she is an “essential” worker.
In essence, I want to be able to go back to the way we were just a few months ago. It is disheartening to see our economy in shambles and there be nothing we can do about it. It is time for our government to take a step back and reassess the situation we are in.
