As time progresses the team aims for a great season but overall self improvement. Their goals aren’t simply to win, but rather to improve and grow as individuals. With such diversity, each player is able to shine on their own, but it is when they come together that makes this group of young individuals truly shine.
“Every year is a bit different, you get different attitudes and different talents,” stated boys’ soccer coach Ruben Zamora.
It is these differences and talents that really make the team so special and unique. For every player will learn from one another, growing and tackling the issues that are placed in front of them. It is more than a sport, for it is the way these players are able to learn and grasp the complexities that come in life.
“Adulthood can be really tough and I try to prepare [them] for it as much as possible,” Coach Zamora added.
“We push them hard and make them work as a unit to make them come together as a team,”
continued Coach Zamora.
Even with such a strong dynamic the team faces some challenges, challenges that they will face and overcome. One of the more prominent difficulties this year is trying to get on the same page with one another.
“Not every game is going to be the same so it’s been difficult for the most part trying to get in sync,” said senior Brando Torres.
Even as they work wonderfully together as a team, there are still times where it’s hard for everyone to be where they need to be at the right time. Soccer is a difficult sport that requires good focus and being adaptable to quick changes.
“The biggest obstacles the team faced was dealing with injuries,” expressed Brando.
Playing dirty is something commonly seen in soccer, but as the season progresses players seem to not notice how with their disciplined playing it can still cause injury. Any injury is serious when it comes to being in the sport, but all the players on the team have lots of passion when stepping onto the field.
“Our team goals are to focus on what’s in front of us, which is to win the league and then focus on playoffs to hopefully win a valley championship,” expressed senior Marcos Rocha.
The team continues to grow and be dedicated as the end of their season is approaching. As they have overcome challenges and paved the way for their goals, they are heading towards these goals head on.
“By the end of the season [I want to] make a run for it in the playoffs and try to represent Selma the best we can,” says Brando.
By dedicating their time and having a coach who supports them, the team is showcasing this representation of the Selma community proudly. They had their senior night on February 3rd accompanied by friends and family.
